What actually happens during the visit?
Dr. DiGenova begins with a gentle assessment and explains each step at whatever level of detail you're comfortable with. Your pet first receives a sedative and drifts into a deep, relaxed sleep — usually in their favorite spot, in your arms, or on their bed. Once they're fully asleep and feel nothing, the final medication is given. The passing itself is calm and painless, and you'll have as much time as you need before, during, and after.
How quickly can you come?
Same-day appointments are often possible depending on the schedule. Please call or text if you don't see availability online — and if your pet is in distress, we'll do everything we can to come quickly.
Should our other pets or children be present?
That's entirely your choice, and Dr. DiGenova can help you think it through. Many families find that letting other pets see and sniff their companion afterward helps them understand and grieve — though sometimes it can make pets more anxious to see their deceased family member. For children, honest and age-appropriate involvement is often healthier than exclusion — but there's no wrong answer, only what feels right for your family.
What happens to my pet afterward?
If you choose aquamation, Dr. DiGenova transports your pet with care and arranges everything end to end. With individual aquamation, ashes are returned to you in a wooden urn. You can pick them up in downtown LA, choose USPS Priority shipping, or professional hand delivery — for hand delivery we'll call to schedule a window. You may also choose to handle burial privately — we'll support whatever you decide.
How is aquamation different from cremation?
Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) is a gentle, water-based process rather than flame-based. It's widely considered a more environmentally friendly option, and it typically returns about 20–30% more ashes than traditional flame cremation.
I'm not sure it's time yet. Can we still talk?
